How to compress an image to 50 KB (or 20, 100, 200 KB) for online forms

Updated 11 October 2026

Online forms often cap uploads at a small size, such as 20 KB for a signature or 50 KB for a photo. A modern phone photo is several megabytes, so you need to shrink it without making it unusable.

Step 1: crop first

Crop the photo so the subject fills the frame. Fewer pixels means smaller files. For a signature, crop close to the ink on a plain white background.

Step 2: resize to the required pixels

If the form lists dimensions (for example 140 × 60 px for a signature), resize to those first using the photo resizer for forms or the signature resizer. Reducing pixels is the most effective way to cut file size.

Step 3: compress to the target

Set the maximum size (for example 50 KB). A good tool finds the highest quality that still fits: it tries quality levels from high to low and only reduces dimensions if quality alone cannot reach the target.

Step 4: check the result

  • Zoom in to confirm a face is clear and text is readable.
  • Make sure the file is still JPG if the form asks for JPG.
  • Confirm the final size is under the limit. If the form lists a minimum too (like 20–50 KB), make sure you are above it.

If you cannot reach the size

  • Resize to smaller pixel dimensions and try again.
  • Use a plainer background: flat colours compress much better than busy scenes.
  • Photograph in good, even light. Noisy low-light photos compress poorly.

Why a browser tool is safer

Passport-style photos and signatures are personal data. A tool that runs in your browser never uploads them, so there is nothing to store or leak.

Try it

Use the tool below with the target set to 50 KB, or pick another size: 20 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB. For common exams, see the exam size guide and always confirm numbers against the official notice.
